Packing your life up to go to university is exciting but also stressful. In particular, you need to make sure you bring all the right things with you to live comfortably — but not so much that it’s difficult to transport everything and your student apartment feels cramped. Instead of leaving everything to the last minute, prepare in advance for move-in day with these tips.
1. Begin Packing as Soon as Possible
Start making a packing list long before you leave. Keep the list on your phone to note down ideas as they occur to you. If you have items that you won’t need between now and when you arrive at university, you can even pack them already.
2. Talk to Your Roommates
There will be some items in your apartment that you can share with your roommates. Before you pack anything like this, reach out to your roommates to make sure they’re not planning to bring the same. Coordinating between you to decide who will bring things like the coffee maker, vacuum cleaner, and throw pillows for the living room couch will limit how much you need to bring (and avoid you making unnecessary purchases). You should also coordinate when you’ll be moving in — staggering times will make things much less chaotic.
3. Pack in Storage Bins
Packing your belongings in storage bins means you’ll have somewhere to keep everything when you arrive. They’ll fit under your bed or in your closet to keep your room neat. Plus, unlike using cardboard boxes, you won’t need to dispose of all your packaging materials when you arrive. Finally, it will make moving out again easy, as you’ll already have everything you need to pack up and go.
4. Bring In-Season Clothing
If you’ll be returning home between semesters, there’s no point bringing clothes for anything beyond the current season. This will also free up space in your closet.
5. Purchase Items When You Arrive
To save space when you’re traveling to university, it may be worth purchasing some items when you arrive. For instance, you could buy stationery, cleaning products, groceries, and personal care items from a local store. Just be aware that many students may have the same idea, meaning some supplies may run short. You may like to compromise by bringing just small quantities of toiletries, a couple pens, and a notebook or two.
6. Use Delivery Services
If you need large items for your apartment, the best way to bring them may be to use a delivery service. For instance, purchasing from a big brand allows you to choose items online or in person and use a delivery service or curb-side pickup from a branch near you when you’re in your college town.
